The “Seehotel Vitznauerhof” was built in 1901,
according to the plans of architect F. Kühn from Mannheim. The hotel with
its Art Nouveau decor provided guests with the luxurious comfort expected of a
first-class hotel in those days: a telephone service, electric light,
low-pressure steam heating and attractive parklands and gardens,
perfect for a gentle stroll.
Its guests included many famous names such as Hermann
Hesse, Richard Strauss, General Henri Guisan, Paul Klee and Princess Gina of
Liechtenstein, who sometimes reserved a whole floor for herself. One hundred
years after it was built, the “Seehotel Vitznauerhof” won the Historic Hotel of
the Year award. The jury's report points out the sensitive
renovation of the overall hotel and the care with which new features
were incorporated in the public areas.
In August 2005, the Lake Lucerne region was hit by
devastating floods, which largely destroyed the hotel and its grounds, forcing
the closure of the Vitznauerhof. When works on the renovation and extention
of the hotel began in 2009, special attention was paid to preserving the
building’s historic fabric and many attractive details, such as paintings and
stucco work, were architecturally highlighted in a skillful way. All rooms and
public areas were given a modern, open and light feel. A brand-new feature is
the Vitznauerhof’s spacious spa with more than 900 square metres of facilities
that open straight onto the grounds and include an inviting outdoor whirlpool.
All 53 rooms offer highest standard. The impression is
one of modern clear-cut lines, natural light, elegant colour combinations and a
careful eye for detail. The very best materials have been used to create
charming, stylish rooms that offer breathtaking views of the lake and mountains.
