The Copacabana Palace faces the
world-famous Copacabana Beach, yet is only minutes away from the business
centre, and the Ipanema and Leblon districts of Rio de Janeiro.
The hotel is located eight
miles from the domestic airport, Santos Dumont, and 20 miles (about a 40-minute
drive, depending on traffic conditions) from Rio’s international airport, Tom
Jobim.
Since opening in 1923, the Copacabana Palace has been renowned as one of
the best places to stay in South America. One of the first hotels in the city
to be built on the seashore, its dazzling 1920s white neo-classical façade
reflects the glamour and history of Rio.
The guest list is as illustrious as the Copacabana Palace itself. Look
through the pages of the hotel’s Golden Book and you’ll find royalty, stars of
stage, screen, music and sport as well as politicians and business leaders.
From Ava Gardner and Anthony Hopkins to Margot Fonteyn and Kiri Te Kanawa,
from Michael Schumacher to Nelson Mandela and Bill and Hillary Clinton –all
have enjoyed the hotel’s fine cuisine, excellent service and beautiful views
overlooking Copacabana Beach.
Since joining the Orient-Express collection in 1989, the hotel has cherished
its historic features and added new ones. While the pool retains its art deco
glamour, new penthouse suites, a lavish spa and the buzzy Bar do Copa keep it a
the cutting edge of contemporary style.
